ABSTRACT This master thesis is regarding the psychological contract and motivation at Kvickly, Tranbjerg. The purpose of the thesis is to examine whether or not there exists discrepancies between the employees and management at Kvickly, Tranbjerg and how Kvickly, Tranbjerg can use the knowledge about the psychological contract and motivation gained in the analysis, to enhance the overall employer satisfaction. The following question constitutes the problem statement.  How do employees at Kvickly, Tranbjerg see the psychological contract and how are they motivated through their work? The problem statement will be answered by four questions. These questions have the purpose of 1) uncover which elements the psychological contract consists of and how this contract can be more visible for every employee 2) how the employees discovers breach on the psychological contract 3) which factors that motivates the employees and 4) how the work they fulfill can be designed so it will result in happier and more motivated employees. The thesis is both theoretical and empirical and will be analyzed through two steps. Firstly, a theoretical description of the psychological contact will be found where after two chosen motivation theories follows. The chosen motivation theories are Herzberg’s two-factor theory and Hackman & Oldham’s job design theory. Through an analysis of the psychological contract and the two motivation theories it will be clarified how they can be used to answer the problem statement. Secondly, an empirical qualitative study will be conducted. The qualitative study will consist of two focus groups interviews and one semi structured interview. The purpose of the semi structured interview is to gain insight in the managements opinions and attitudes towards the psychological contract and motivation and the purpose with the two focus group interviews is the gain insight on their opinions and attitudes towards Kvickly, Tranbjergs handling of the psychological contract and motivation. The semi structured interview was not seen as comprehensive so a new interview was done to supplement the first one made. In regard to the applied theory, the transcriptions of the interviews were analyzed after having explained the data collection method. The results of the empirical study will be assessed in relation to the chosen theories to see if the respondent’s points of views are consistent with the theories or if new things will emerge. The results will give Kvickly, Tranbjerg an opportunity to see if they are doing things correctly according to their employees or if things should be changed in order to gain more motivated and satisfied employees. For this reason a set of actions will be made for Kvickly, Tranbjerg to implement. The analysis shows that the overall picture regarding the psychological contract and motivation is negative.
