The central theme of this edition is Organizing and Managing Project Based Learning. The organization of projects and the implication of projects for the workload of teachers is a widely discussed theme when implementing projects, as is project management, from a teacher´s as well as a student´s point of view. There will be many opportunities for learning, discussions and interaction with researchers that are working with Engineering Education, in several countries of the world, in the extensive programme. The Symposium will take place at Faculty of Exact Sciences and Technology of Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo PUC/SP, Brazil. Lima Dinis Carvalho University of Minho v SEFI Welcome Note With the fourth edition of Project Approaches in Engineering Education, it is becoming a well established and consolidated discussion forum for those involved on active learning and, more specifically, on problem assisted learning. In this occasion the general call for discussion is about organizing and managing PBL, with a special reference to the design of new PBL experiences. Through these words I am answering the request received from the Organization to address and welcome participants on PAEE, on behalf the Curriculum Development Working Group (CDWG) of the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI). The SEFI- CDWG is a forum for discussion on the development of Engineering Education, and it is formed by a group of people highly involved in the innovation of engineering education. The CDWG is open to teachers and managers of education, students, and employers of engineers. The Group focuses its activities on curriculum innovation, quality assurance and accreditation, advancement of teaching and learning methods, and faculty development and teachers training. There are several things to be remarked with reference to this International Symposium. One, is the fact that Project Based Learning (PBL) is still considered as one of the most effective methods in Engineering Education in order to develop in the students´ competences and abilities which are everyday more and more demanded by employers operating in a global labour market. On the other hand, the Symposium crosses over the Atlantic Ocean and sits at Sao Paulo, which is a way to meet more Latin- American Universities but also a challenge for their European Colleagues for joining them in a time of big financial difficulties. The third one also relates with the present economic crisis, which is striking hardly many European Universities, as management is one of the main topics
