Meanwhile, within a few years a vast range of new services and applications will arise as 5G technologies become widespread. Operators are being challenged to deliver extreme mobile broadband to provide new levels of customer experience, to support huge numbers of simultaneously connected devices and to ensure ultra-low latency connectivity. Flexibility in their operations will become essential and ultra-high capacity networks of the future must meet the demand for telecom grade resiliency. At the same time, growing environmental pressures are forcing operators to become more energy efficient and reduce their carbon emissions. With the radio network at the heart of their business, operators will need to deploy base station sites that are simpler, more flexible, wideband and multi-band, multi-technology, energy efficient and with lowest total cost of ownership (TCO). Providing operators with a smooth and flexible journey towards 5G and cloud connectivity, AirScale Base Stations support all radio technologies (GSM, WCDMA, FDD LTE,TDD LTE, LTE-A Pro and are 5G-ready) and network architectures (Distributed RAN, Centralized RAN and Cloud RAN). AirScale Base Stations offer 10 Gbps throughput per system module which handles baseband processing and control and includes fronthaul and backhaul interfaces. More capacity can be implemented by chaining together an unlimited number of system modules. Furthermore, AirScale Base Station can take advantage of additional baseband processing power available from Cloud RAN, available with AirScale, for unlimited scalability. Built-in redundancy of all units and interfaces (control, baseband, power supply, synchronization, backhaul and fronthaul) creates Nokia’s hexa-resiliency capability. If a failure occurs, the base station automatically switches over to its redundant capability, avoiding the need for an urgent site visit by an engineer. Efficient, lean and offering wideband and multi-band performance, AirScale Base Stations are visually discreet, energy efficient and sustainable. All this innovation is compatible with existing Nokia radio networks so operators can expand their current networks with AirScale Base Stations and elements to make full and continued use of their existing investments. Page 3 www.nokia.com Ultra-lean, ultra-efficient for 50% lower TCO The Nokia AirScale System Module has ten times the performance of the previous generation of Nokia base station. It is scalable: simply add plug-in units to increase capacity as needed. Further scaling is achieved by chaining system modules without the need for any additional hardware like site switches or routers. Nokia AirScale System Module Sitting at the heart of AirScale Base Station is new silicon technology designed by Nokia to create software-defined system modules and radios that are ultra-lean and ultra-efficient, all supported by common multi-radio software. Leaner and simpler site solutions will enable operators to more easily adopt new bands, layers and the use of higher order MIMO schemes. Nokia AirScale Radio meets this need by enabling unparalleled multi-band operation with up to three bands integrated in a single radio unit. This provides operators with more flexibility in network deployment, reduced installation complexity for different bands at the same site and low TCO. Integrated Passive Intermodulation (PIM) cancellation ensures the highest multi-band performance for top network quality. CPRI with an IQ compression interface ensures less hardware is needed while also being compatible with standard Nokia CPRI radios.
